LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Lymphatic Drainage is a manual therapy that uses specialised, gentle, rhythmic movements in the direction of lymph flow. It stimulates the lymph channels, boosting the flow of lymph and draining excess fluid from the body. It not only has specific benefits for many health conditions but is a fantastic treatment for relaxing the body and reducing stress.

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

The lymphatic system comprises of a network of lymphatic vessels, nodes and glands It is responsible for regulating our immunity, healing injuries, clearing metabolic waste from our cells and plays a role in maintaining blood pressure, blood volume and fluid balance. Unlike our circulatory system, the lymphatic system has no heart to pump lymph around the body and therefore relies on the movement of our bodies and the action of breathing to move it around. When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish and lymph is not flowing freely throughout the body, fluid can build up resulting in complications sush as oedema,or a general feeling of lethargy and malaise. It can also result in a weakened immune system leaving us feeling "run down" and more prone to colds and flu.

BENEFITS OF LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

BENEFITS OF LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

OEDEMA

Oedema can occur for many reasons including post-operative swelling, after injuries or as a result of a sedentary lifestyle. Lymphatic Drainage is very beneficial for this, encouraging the movement of lymph from problem areas and directing it to the nodes to be filtered and drained.

SCARRING

Lymphatic Drainage can help to reduce scar tissue and even old scars can benefit. Scars can become softer, smoother and more flexible with regular, repeated sessions.

IMMUNE SYSTEM

Lymphatic Drainage enhances the distribution of white blood cells throughout the body, boosting the immune system.

INJURIES

By stimulating microcirculation, Lymphatic Drainage helps to speed the healing of injuries. Toxins and damaged cells are removed and the flow of nutrients and fibres are increased helping to repair the injured tissue.

RELAXATION

The slow, repetitive movements of Lymphatic Drainage stimulate the body's parasympathetic nervous system and reduce the "fight or flight" response to stress. When the body is in a state of stress it tenses and produces the hormone cortisol in defense. As a result the immune system is suppressed and the organ systems are put under pressure. Lymphatic Drainage relaxes the muscles, slows the heart and breathing rate and allows the body to return to its normal functioning. This has immense benefit for those with conditions such as anxiety, fatigue, depression, fibromyalgia and ME.
